Cross Channel Walker 25th August 1978 U. S. Army sgt Walter C

Cross Channel Walker 25th August 1978
U.S. Army sgt Walter C. Robinson walked into the English Channel at Folkestone at 5.30am at the start of his attempt to cross to France, using his special inflatable platform shoes. The journey took him 11 hours, strong tides close to the French coast threaten to defeat him, but in the end it was a walkover.
He had already walked across the Hudson Bay and the length of the Panama Canal. He is seen here at 6am with the cliffs of Dover in the background talking to his support boat which escorted him across the busy water way.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a remarkable feat of determination and innovation. On the 25th of August 1978, U. S. Army Sergeant Walter C. Robinson embarked on an audacious adventure - crossing the English Channel from Folkestone to France using his ingenious inflatable platform shoes. As dawn breaks at 5:30 am, Sgt. Robinson sets off into the chilly waters with the cliffs of Dover standing tall in the background. A support boat accompanies him throughout his arduous journey, navigating through busy waters and ensuring his safety. For eleven grueling hours, Sgt. Robinson battles against strong tides that threaten to hinder his progress near the French coast. However, undeterred by these challenges, he perseveres until victory is within reach. This awe-inspiring image captures a moment at 6 am when Sgt. Robinson communicates with his support boat amidst vast expanses of water and endless possibilities ahead. His previous accomplishments include walking across Hudson Bay and traversing the length of the Panama Canal – a testament to his indomitable spirit and thirst for adventure. The photograph evokes feelings of admiration for this extraordinary man who defied conventional limits by inventing such unique footwear for this daring voyage across one of nature's most formidable barriers – symbolizing human resilience and ingenuity in pursuit of dreams beyond imagination. *** Local Caption *** watscan - - 12/11/2009 - -) (1970s, 20th century, adventure, cliff
