EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Tench, Tinca tinca, and Carp, Cyprinus carpio," is a stunning example of natural history illustration from the early 19th century. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The illustration depicts two common European freshwater fish species, the tench (Tinca tinca) and the carp (Cyprinus carpio). Tench is shown on the left, with its distinctive olive-green color and large, fan-like pectoral fins. Carp, on the right, is easily recognizable by its large, rounded scales and barbel-tipped lips. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of the illustration are a testament to the skill of the engraver, Massard, who worked under the direction of Turpin. The use of the stipple engraving technique adds an additional layer of depth and texture to the artwork, making the scales and fins of the fish appear almost three-dimensional. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the natural history of these fish species but also serves as a window into the past, providing a glimpse into the scientific research and artistic techniques of the early 19th century.
