This evocative photograph captures the essence of Swaziland in the late 1960s, a time of transition and change in this small southern African kingdom. The image, taken in 1967, depicts a group of Swazi women dressed in traditional attire, carrying baskets on their heads as they walk along a dusty road. In the background, the rolling hills of Swaziland stretch out towards the horizon, dotted with huts and homesteads. Swaziland, now known as Eswatini, gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1968. However, this photograph was taken just a year before this momentous event. The 1960s were a period of intense political activity in Africa, with many countries gaining their independence from colonial rule. Swaziland, however, remained a constitutional monarchy under the rule of King Sobhuza II. The Swazi women in this photograph are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Swaziland.
