EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Sir Thomas Erpingham: A Medieval Soldier and His Unconventional Marital Life Sir Thomas Erpingham (1387-1428) was a prominent English soldier and courtier during the late Middle Ages, who rose to prominence under the reigns of King Henry IV and Henry V. This evocative image captures the essence of Sir Thomas Erpingham, showcasing his regal attire and the two women by his side, who were his wives. Erpingham's military career began in earnest during the late 14th century, when he served in various campaigns against the Welsh rebels under the leadership of Owain Glyndŵr. His military prowess and loyalty to the crown earned him the favor of King Henry IV, who made him a Knight of the Garter in 1404. The intriguing aspect of Sir Thomas Erpingham's life is his unconventional marital history. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Montagu, around 1405. However, he did not remain a widower for long, as he married his second wife, Elizabeth Cheyne, in 1415. This second marriage was an unusual one, as it occurred while his first wife was still alive. It is believed that Elizabeth Montagu may have been aware of, or even consented to, this arrangement, as there is evidence that she continued to live in the household and even bore him children after the second marriage. This image of Sir Thomas Erpingham, with his two wives by his side, offers a glimpse into the complexities of medieval society and the unique marital arrangements that were sometimes accepted during this period. The image, which dates from the late 15th or early 16th century, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Sir Thomas Erpingham and the intriguing stories that can be found in the annals of history.
