EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the Scottish Regalia, an essential part of the coronation ceremony for Scottish Monarchs. The Regalia represents the symbols of Sovereignty and includes several significant objects. At the center is the Scottish Crown, a personal emblem of the Sovereign, adorned with precious jewels and intricate designs. The Sceptre, an emblem of Royal power, is held in the other hand. The Sceptre is topped with a golden orb and a cross, symbolizing the monarch's power over their kingdom and their role as the protector of the faith. The monarch also wears a jeweled belt, known as the Royal Belt of Scotland, which is fastened with a large brooch in the shape of a lion rampant, a symbol of Scotland. The monarch also holds a sword, signifying justice and the right of peace and war. The sword's hilt is wrapped in a velvet covering, and the blade is inscribed with the motto "Defender of the Faith." Additionally, the monarch holds a Mace, which is a ceremonial staff carried before the monarch during processions. The Mace is adorned with precious stones and gold, and its top is in the shape of a crown. The monarch also wears two rings, one bearing the Arms of Scotland and the other the Stone of Scone, a sacred relic believed to symbolize the connection between the monarch and the Scottish people. This photograph was taken during the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, an occasion that marked her official installation as the Monarch of Scotland as well as the United Kingdom. The Scottish Regalia continues to be an essential part of the coronation ceremony, symbolizing the rich history and traditions of Scottish monarchy.
