EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a memorable moment in aviation history, as some of the early birds who learned to fly under the guidance of the Wright Brothers gather at Wright Brothers Field on 19 August 1940. The pioneer flyers, who are depicted in the image, include (from left to right, first row) William Kabitzke from Chicago, Orville Wright, and Charles Wald from Freeport, Long Island, New York. In the second row, we find Walter Brookins from Los Angeles, R.M. Wright from Washington D.C., J.C. Henning from St. Louis, Missouri, Captain Kenneth Whiting from New York, Bernard L. Whalen from Hartford, Connecticut, Albert Elton from Youngstown, Ohio, and Robert G. Fowler from San Jose, California. Centre rear, we see George A. Gray from Chevy Chase, Maryland. These aviation pioneers, who are seated around the Wright Brothers' famous transport aircraft, were among the first to master the art of flying under the tutelage of the Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, are credited with inventing the world's first successful motor-operated airplane and making the first controlled and sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903. The image is a poignant reminder of the early days of aviation, when the Wright Brothers' groundbreaking achievements paved the way for the development of modern air travel. The Wright Brothers Field, located in Dayton, Ohio, was a significant training ground for pilots during the early years of aviation, and this photograph captures a group of its most accomplished students.
