EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures a moment from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on 20 June 1897, an event marking the sixty-year anniversary of her reign. In the photograph, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Frederick Temple, is seen paying homage to the Queen after the service at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Queen Victoria, dressed elegantly in a white gown and wearing a diamond diadem and a large parasol, rides in an open carriage, accompanied by her guards and soldiers. The crowds of people lining the streets, many of them waving hats and handkerchiefs, add to the festive atmosphere. The Archbishop, wearing his full vestments and carrying his crosier, bends before the Queen to perform the ancient ritual of doing homage. This act symbolized the spiritual allegiance of the Church of England to the monarch. The scene is reminiscent of the late Victorian era, with the grandeur and pomp of the British monarchy on full display. The photograph, taken by INL Graphic or ILN, was published by The Illustrated London News, a leading weekly newspaper at the time, and offers a glimpse into the grandeur and historical significance of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
