EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk aircraft, specifically G-AOUO, which once belonged to Air Service Training. The image, taken circa 1965, depicts the Chipmunk in its original form before its transformation into a Supermunk by the Royal Air Force Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA) in the early 1970s. G-AOUO was one of several Chipmunks purchased by the RAFGSA, and the acquisition came with the rights to the Supermunk conversion, including the drawings, tooling, and spares. This was a significant acquisition for the RAFGSA, as it allowed them to complete several more Supermunk conversions, providing them with reliable, powerful, and easy-to-maintain glider tugs. The Supermunk was a modified version of the Chipmunk, powered by a 180hp Lycoming engine, making it a more efficient and effective tug for towing gliders. The RAFGSA's investment in this conversion proved to be a wise one, as it enabled them to expand their operations and support the training of glider pilots more effectively. The Chipmunk, a versatile and iconic aircraft, has a rich history in aviation, with its roots dating back to the 1940s. Its distinctive design and capabilities have made it a favorite among pilots and aviation enthusiasts alike. In this photograph, we can see the Chipmunk in its element, ready for takeoff or to tow a glider, embodying the spirit of adventure and innovation that defines aviation transportation.
