Commissioned in the late 1890s, Massena was part of a group of five battleships ordered by the French Navy in response to the British Royal Sovereign class. The Massena-class battleships were characterized by their imposing size and impressive armament. With a length of 125 meters and a beam of 21.5 meters, Massena displaced over 13,000 tons.
