EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1857, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, showcases an extension proposal for the St. Stephen's Porch to the Clock Tower at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. Designed by the renowned architect Charles Barry, the extension aimed to connect the existing St. Stephen's Porch with the iconic Clock Tower, enhancing the architectural harmony of this historic building. The St. Stephen's Porch, located on the Victoria Tower side of the Palace of Westminster, was originally designed by Barry as part of his extensive restoration work on the Palace following the devastating fire of 1834. The Clock Tower, also known as the Elizabeth Tower, was completed in 1859, making this proposed extension a precursor to its construction. The extension, as depicted in the print, would have created a seamless transition between the two structures, with the ornate detailing of the St. Stephen's Porch blending effortlessly with the grandeur of the Clock Tower. The extension's design is characterized by its intricate stonework, elegant arches, and the use of classical motifs, reflecting the architectural style of the time. The proposed extension was part of a larger vision to enhance the Palace of Westminster, which also included the construction of the Victoria Tower and the addition of the Victoria Memorial. However, due to various reasons, including budget constraints and changing architectural tastes, the extension was not carried out as planned. Nevertheless, the print remains a fascinating glimpse into the architectural evolution of one of the most iconic buildings in London's history.
