EDITORS COMMENTS
A Dodo Amongst the Treasures of The African Museum of the Island of Aix, France The African Museum of the Island of Aix, situated on the picturesque island of Aix in Charente-Maritime, France, is a unique institution that holds a captivating blend of hunting trophies and ethnographic objects from the African continent. Established in the early 20th century, the museum, which shares the label 'museum of France' with the nearby Napoleonic Museum, offers a glimpse into the customs and traditions of the 1930s. Amongst the myriad exhibits, a replica Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) stands proudly, drawing the attention of visitors. The Dodo, a flightless bird endemic to Mauritius, was declared extinct in the late 17th century. This life-size reproduction, however, serves as a poignant reminder of the once-thriving species. Baron Gourgaud, a prominent figure in the museum's history, was the primary collector of its hunting trophies. His extensive collection includes a diverse array of animals hunted during his travels in Africa. The museum, therefore, not only showcases the natural history of the African continent but also offers insights into the colonial era. The Dodo, a symbol of Mauritian heritage, is a striking addition to the museum's collection. Its presence, though a reproduction, evokes a sense of nostalgia and wonder, reminding us of the rich natural history that once existed and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
