EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the sleek lines and imposing presence of Vickers Varsity WL627 as it taxis on the tarmac at RAF Newton in circa 1982. The Varsity, a versatile twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft, was a mainstay of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) fleet during the late 1970s and 1980s. Originally designed and manufactured by Vickers-Armstrongs as a military derivative of the successful Vickers Valetta, the Varsity was primarily used for navigation training, air-to-air refueling, and maritime patrol missions. Its twin engines, mounted high on the wings, provided ample power for its various roles, while its large cabin offered plenty of space for crew and passengers. In this image, we see WL627 in its RAF livery, with the distinctive roundel and fin flash adorning its fuselage. The aircraft's wings are adorned with various markings, including the red and white stripes of the Royal Air Force Training Command. The photo also offers a glimpse into the bustling activity of the airbase, with other aircraft and support vehicles visible in the background. The Vickers Varsity served with distinction in the RAF for over two decades, eventually being replaced by more modern aircraft in the late 1990s. Today, a few examples of this iconic aircraft remain in preservation, serving as reminders of the vital role it played in the history of military aviation.
