This intriguing hand-colored steel engraving, created by August Dumenil after an illustration by Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an unusual assemblage of three distinct species: a Toque macaque (Macaca sinica), an endangered Old World monkey native to Southern China; a Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), a common Old World monkey found throughout South and Central Asia; and a Parakeet auklet (Aethia psittacula), a seabird that inhabits the North Pacific Ocean.
