EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing hand-colored steel engraving, created by August Dumenil after an illustration by Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an unusual assemblage of three distinct species: a Toque macaque (Macaca sinica), an endangered Old World monkey native to Southern China; a Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), a common Old World monkey found throughout South and Central Asia; and a Parakeet auklet (Aethia psittacula), a seabird that inhabits the North Pacific Ocean. The Toque macaque, also known as the Chinese macaque or the bonnet macaque, is depicted wearing a distinctive red headdress, which is a natural part of its appearance. The Rhesus macaque, on the other hand, is shown in its natural state, with its grey fur and bushy tail. The Parakeet auklet, a small seabird, is illustrated in flight, displaying its vibrant green and blue plumage. The engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these three species, which were of great interest to naturalists and explorers during the 19th century. The meticulous attention to detail in the hand-coloring and the skillful engraving technique bring the animals to life, making this a beautiful and educational piece of art and science history. The "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" was a comprehensive work that aimed to document the natural world through illustrations and descriptions. This particular engraving, featuring the Toque macaque, Rhesus macaque, and Parakeet auklet, is a testament to the remarkable achievements of the naturalists, illustrators, and engravers of the time, who dedicated themselves to the exploration and documentation of the natural world.
