EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts Sorghum bicolor, also known as Sorghum grass, great millet, durra, jowari, milo, Sorgho a sucre, or simply sorghum. The image is based on a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert, created as part of the comprehensive work "La Regne Vegetal: Planetes Agricoles et Forestieres" published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. Sorghum is a versatile and important cereal crop, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, and is now widely cultivated in various parts of the world. The plant is characterized by its tall, sturdy stalks, which can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) tall, and its distinctive inflorescence, which bears numerous small flowers. The grain produced by the plant is used for human and animal consumption, and the plant is also used for making syrup, biofuels, and other industrial applications. The engraving, handcoloured by Oudet, beautifully captures the intricate details of the sorghum plant, from its slender leaves to its delicate flowers. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical collection. This historical record of the sorghum plant not only showcases its beauty but also highlights its significance as an important agricultural commodity.
