EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, entitled "Shaggy Sponge Crab and Dynomene hispida," is a stunning example of the naturalistic illustrations found in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The central focus of the image is the Shaggy Sponge Crab (Dromidia hirsutissima), a marine crab with distinctive, shaggy pincers covered in sponge-like structures. These crabs are found in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean, and are named for their unique appearance. Accompanying the Shaggy Sponge Crab is the Dynomene hispida, also known as the Hairy or Spiny Dromia. This crab is depicted in a more conventional form, with long, spiny legs and a smooth, pinkish-brown carapace. The Dynomene hispida is a common crab found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this illustration are a testament to the skill of the artists and engravers involved. Turpin, the director of the project, was considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image. This illustration provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past, showcasing the intricacies of marine life and the dedication of the scientific community to documenting and preserving knowledge of the natural world. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a groundbreaking work, featuring over 1,500 plates and covering a wide range of natural sciences, including botany, zoology, and mineralogy. This image of the Shaggy Sponge Crab and Dynomene hispida is a testament to the enduring value of such works in documenting and celebrating the natural world.
