EDITORS COMMENTS
In this series of photographs, the iconic Great Wheel at Earls Court, London, is undergoing a metamorphosis. Known also as the Gigantic Wheel, this structure had stood proudly as a beloved amusement attraction for twelve long years. However, the inexorable passage of time had taken its toll, and it was now time for the wheel to make way for new beginnings. The first image in this evocative sequence showcases the wheel in all its glory, its towering height a testament to the engineering prowess of the early 1900s. The second photograph captures the initial stages of the demolition process, with the wheel's massive iron components already beginning to take on a dismantled appearance. As the series progresses, the scale of the undertaking becomes apparent. Workers can be seen meticulously taking apart the ironwork, each piece carefully removed and set aside for sale to merchants. The once-mighty wheel is reduced to a collection of smaller, manageable components, a poignant reminder of its former grandeur. The final photograph in the series shows the wheel's base, now a hollowed-out shell, standing as a stark reminder of the structure that once graced Earls Court. The Great Wheel, a beloved fixture of London's exhibition history, had been brought down, piece by piece, marking the end of an era. This series of photographs offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a poignant record of the demolition of the Great Wheel at Earls Court in 1907. The images capture the essence of a bygone era, a time when the simple pleasure of a ride on a Ferris wheel could captivate the imagination of generations.
