EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving by the Pauquet brothers, after an original illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe" (Natural History of European Butterflies), published in 1864, features three exquisite hawkmoths: the Lime Hawkmoth (Mimas tiliae), the Eyed Hawkmoth (Smerinthus ocellatus), and the Poplar Hawkmoth (Laothoe populi). The Lime Hawkmoth, also known as the Twin-spotted Wainscot, is a medium-sized moth with a wingspan of around 6-7 cm. Its forewings are a striking green color, with a white band and two black spots near the edge. The moth is named for its lime-green coloration, which helps it blend in with the leaves of its host plant, the lime tree. The Eyed Hawkmoth, also called the Owl Moth, is a larger moth with a wingspan of up to 10 cm. Its wings are a rich brown color with large, round, white eyespots. These eyespots serve as a defense mechanism, deterring predators by making the moth look larger and more threatening. The Poplar Hawkmoth is a medium-sized moth with a wingspan of around 7 cm. Its forewings are a pale brown color with a distinctive black and white stripe along the edge. The moth is named for its preference for poplar trees, where it lays its eggs. This beautiful engraving showcases the intricate details of these moths' wings and bodies, as well as their unique coloration and patterns. The skillful use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art. The Pauquet brothers' engraving is a testament to the natural beauty of these fascinating creatures and the dedication of Hippolyte Lucas to documenting the natural history of Europe's butterflies.
