EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving showcases the Broad-leaved Helleborine Orchid, Epipactis helleborine, as illustrated in the "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate detail of the image is a testament to the skill of the illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is renowned as one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Broad-leaved Helleborine Orchid is a rare and beautiful plant, native to Europe and parts of Asia. Its broad, green leaves are speckled with small, white spots, and its delicate, pink-purple flowers bloom in the late summer and early autumn. This orchid is also known as Perforate Helleborine due to the tiny holes on the edges of its leaves, which resemble the perforations found on the leaves of St. John's Wort, Hypericum perforatum, which grows in the same habitats. The engraving was drawn and directed by Turpin, and the meticulous engraving was executed by Giarre. The image was published by Batelli e Figli, a prominent publishing house in Florence. Turpin's botanical illustrations are highly sought after by collectors and researchers for their accuracy, beauty, and historical significance. This engraving not only showcases the Broad-leaved Helleborine Orchid but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of botany and the art of botanical illustration during the 19th century. The intricate details of the plant's anatomy, along with its vibrant colors, make this a stunning addition to any botanical collection.
