EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Mary Jane Clarke (1863-1910), the younger sister of Emmeline Pankhurst, during her unwavering commitment to the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U) and the fight for women's suffrage in early 20th century Britain. By 1909, Mary Jane had become an organiser for the W.S.P.U, residing in Brighton. The following year, she played a pivotal role in running the organisation's General Election campaign. On November 18, 1910, Mary Jane joined Emmeline and other suffragettes in the Black Friday deputation, a peaceful demonstration aimed at presenting a petition to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George. The protest turned violent when police met the women with batons, resulting in numerous arrests. Mary Jane was among those taken into custody and was released a few days later. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on Christmas Day, 1910. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the suffragettes, who risked their lives and freedom in their quest for women's rights and suffrage. The photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, as women's voices began to be heard and the path towards greater equality was forged.
