EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite of Savoy, born in 1532, was the eldest daughter of King Francis I of France and his mistress, Anne de Pisseleu. Despite her controversial origins, Marguerite went on to become an esteemed patron of literature and the arts in Europe. In 1559, she married Emanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, a union that strengthened the ties between the French and Savoyard courts. This striking portrait of Marguerite, created around 1560, captures her beauty and refinement. Her elegant attire, adorned with pearls and intricate lace, reflects the opulence of the Savoyard court. The delicate folds of her gown and the delicate texture of her veil add to the sense of elegance and sophistication. Marguerite's love for literature and learning was well-known. She was an avid reader and a generous patron of writers and scholars. Among those she supported were the poet Jean-Antoine de Baif and the historian Pierre de Brantome. Her literary salon in Turin became a gathering place for intellectuals and artists from all over Europe. Despite her privileged position, Marguerite was also known for her piety and charitable works. She founded several convents and hospitals, and was deeply involved in the education of young girls. Her patronage of the arts and her dedication to the welfare of her people earned her the respect and admiration of her contemporaries. Marguerite of Savoy died in 1574, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy. Her patronage of literature and the arts helped to establish Savoy as a center of intellectual and artistic activity in Europe. This portrait, with its striking depiction of a powerful and intelligent woman, serves as a reminder of her enduring influence.
