The Malik-I-Maidan at the Bijapur Fort, Karnataka, India. The Malik-i-Maidan (Master of the Battlefield), also called Burj-E-Sherz, was erected by Ibrahim Adil Shah II and named after the Battle of Talikota of 1565 in which the Vijayangar empire was routed. It has a large cannon (pictured here), 4.45 metres long and weighing 55 tonnes - considered one of the largest forged medieval guns. The muzzle is shaped in the form of a lion head with carved open jaws as if devouring an elephant (depicted between the jaws). It was cast at Ahmadnagar from bell metal by Muhammad Bin Husain Rumi in 1549. Date: circa 1910s

The Malik-I-Maidan, or Master of the Battlefield, at the Bijapur Fort in Karnataka, India, is a testament to the grandeur and military prowess of the Adil Shahi dynasty. This impressive structure, also known as Burj-E-Sherz, was erected by Ibrahim Adil Shah II in the late 16th century, in commemoration of the Battle of Talikota in 1565, where the Vijayanagara empire was decisively defeated. At the heart of the Malik-I-Maidan stands a massive cannon, one of the largest forged medieval guns known to exist. Measuring an impressive 4.45 metres in length and weighing an astonishing 55 tonnes, this colossal ordnance is a marvel of medieval engineering. The muzzle of the cannon is intricately carved in the form of a lion head, with open jaws that seem to devour an elephant between them. This magnificent cannon was cast at Ahmadnagar in 1549 by Muhammad Bin Husain Rumi, a skilled artisan. The cannon's size and scale are truly awe-inspiring, with its wide bore and immense size dwarfing any modern-day artillery piece.
