EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, makes her way towards St Margaret's Church in Westminster on the 10th of November, 1983, for the annual Service of Remembrance. Accompanied by senior officers of the British Legion, the Queen Mother's arrival marks the beginning of a solemn ceremony to honor the fallen soldiers of the Armed Forces. The image captures the regal elegance of the Queen Mother, dressed in black and wearing a poppy on her chest, as she walks along the pavement, surrounded by the red poppies that adorn the ground. The senior officers of the British Legion, clad in their uniforms and medals, follow closely behind, paying their respects to the monarch. The presence of the London Fire Brigade in the photograph adds an unexpected yet fitting element to the scene. Firefighters, both in uniform and civilian attire, are seen in the background, paying their respects to the Queen Mother and the fallen soldiers. This inclusion serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by all branches of the military, including the fire services, in times of war and peace. The clergy, including a clergyman in robes, can be seen waiting at the entrance of the church, ready to welcome the Queen Mother and the attendees into the place of worship. The atmosphere is somber, yet filled with a sense of unity and respect as the community comes together to remember and honor those who have given their lives in the service of their country. This photograph, taken in the 1980s, is a poignant reminder of the importance of remembrance and the enduring bond between the monarchy, the military, and the people of the United Kingdom.
