EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Red Cross Street fire station of the London County Council (LCC) in the City of London, circa 1907. The image showcases a parade of horse-drawn firefighting appliances on the forecourt of the station, including two horse-drawn pumps and a manual hose cart. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) operated this station, one of five within the City of London (plus a river station at Blackfriars), from its opening in 1900 until its closure in 1964. The replacement Barbican fire station took over the responsibilities of the Red Cross Street station. The Edwardian-era fire station was an essential part of the city's firefighting services, with its horse-drawn appliances ready to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice. Firemen, firemen, and firefighters could be seen harnessing the horses and preparing the equipment for deployment. The horses, an integral part of the fire service during this period, played a crucial role in the rapid response to fires. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the early days of the London Fire Brigade and the firefighting methods used during the early 20th century. The Red Cross Street fire station stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who served the City of London, ensuring the safety and protection of its residents.
