EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the intensity of the GLC-LFB Fifty Pump Fire that ravaged Wilsons Wharf, near Tooley Street in Southwark, during the summer of 1971. The blaze, which was the biggest of the decade, brought back haunting memories of the tragic event that had occurred at the same location in 1861, when London's Fire Chief, James Braidwood, lost his life. The fire, which engulfed a disused cold store warehouse, resulted in several firefighters being seriously injured. The toxic smoke from the fire was also a hazard, affecting not only the brave firemen and women on the scene but also the paramedics and ambulance crews who arrived to tend to the wounded. The image shows a firefighter, wearing protective gear, assessing the situation as fire engines and ambulances line the street, ready to transport the injured to hospital. The vehicles' lights illuminate the darkened scene, adding to the sense of urgency and chaos. This poignant photograph is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the London Fire Brigade and the emergency services during one of the most significant fires in the city's history.
