This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic French artist Jean-François Raffaelli (1850-1924) in his studio, surrounded by the frozen faubourgs of Paris during the late 1890s. Born in Marseille, Raffaelli moved to Paris in 1868 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. He quickly became enamored with the city's gritty streets and the people who inhabited them.
