EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning 5th century BC Parian marble sculpture, Hippodamia, the daughter of King Oenomaus of Pisa in ancient Greece, is depicted as a graceful and elegant figure. She is featured on the east pediment of the Temple of Zeus in the Sanctuary of Olympia, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. Hippodamia's mythological story is deeply intertwined with the mythology of Pelops and Zeus. According to the myth, Pelops fell in love with Hippodamia and wanted to marry her. However, her father, Oenomaus, was reluctant to give his daughter in marriage and challenged any suitor to a chariot race. Pelops, with the help of Myrtilus, won the race, but Oenomaus was killed in the process. Myrtilus, however, was later betrayed by Pelops, and as a result, Hippodamia was married to Pelops against her will. This sculpture of Hippodamia is believed to be a portrait of a real woman, possibly a priestess or a noblewoman from the ancient Greek city-state of Elis. The intricate details of her drapery, hairstyle, and facial features showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the ancient Greek sculptors. The serene expression on her face and the fluidity of her pose convey a sense of tranquility and grace. The east pediment of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia is one of the most well-preserved and significant works of ancient Greek art. It is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Greece and continues to captivate scholars and visitors alike. The sculpture of Hippodamia is a masterpiece that embodies the beauty, elegance, and mythological richness of ancient Greek art.
