EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing marine species: the Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna zygaena) and the Smooth Hound Shark (Mustelus mustelus). The illustration, created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was directed by Turpin and expertly engraved by Massard. Pretre was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. This exquisite artwork is part of Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, a comprehensive reference work on natural history. The Hammerhead Shark, with its distinctive hammer-like head, is shown in the upper left corner of the print. Its large, fan-like head helps it to locate prey in murky waters by enhancing its sensory capabilities. The Smooth Hound Shark, on the other hand, is depicted in the lower right corner. Its smooth, gray body is covered in small, tooth-like denticles, and its snout is long and pointed. Surrounding the two sharks are various other marine creatures, including a snake eel (Ophidion barbatum), a blenny (Chasmodes cloquetii), a sandeel (Ammodytes tobianus), and an ophidian (Ophidion sp.). These additional species add to the richness and diversity of the underwater world depicted in this beautiful engraving. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this handcolored copperplate stipple engraving make it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the marine life of the early 19th century and serves as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
