EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts General Robert Georges Nivelle (1856-1924), the French Commander-in-Chief from December 1916 to May 1917, as he is shown at his desk. Nivelle's tenure as commander came during a pivotal moment in World War I, as the French and Allied forces were attempting to break the stalemate on the Western Front. Born on January 1, 1856, in Chartres, France, Nivelle rose through the ranks of the French military, earning a reputation as a brilliant strategist and tactician. He served in various capacities during the early years of the war, including as the commander of the 12th Army Corps and the 10th Army. In December 1916, Nivelle was appointed Commander-in-Chief, replacing General Joseph Joffre. He was tasked with leading the French forces in a major offensive, Operation Nivelle, which was intended to break through the German lines and bring an end to the war. The offensive, which began in April 1917, was initially successful, but quickly bogged down and resulted in heavy casualties. Despite the setbacks, Nivelle remained committed to his strategy, and continued to press the offensive. However, the failure of Operation Nivelle led to a loss of confidence in Nivelle's leadership, and he was eventually relieved of his command in May 1917. Nivelle's tenure as Commander-in-Chief is a significant chapter in the history of World War I. His aggressive approach to the war and his commitment to breaking the stalemate on the Western Front made him a controversial figure, and his legacy remains a subject of debate among military historians. This illustration, which shows Nivelle at his desk, provides a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in one of the most important conflicts in world history.
