EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the enchanting beauty and grace of Emily Sellwood, later known as Lady Tennyson, the beloved wife of the renowned English poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson. Born on December 12, 1813, in Somersby, Lincolnshire, Emily was the eldest daughter of Reverend George Sellwood and his wife, Mary. Emily and Alfred first met in 1830 when she was just 17 years old, and he was 22. They were introduced by Alfred's brother, Charles, who was a close friend of Emily's family. The two quickly fell in love, and Alfred wrote numerous poems expressing his deep affection for her. They married on August 12, 1850, in a small ceremony at the Sellwood family home, and Emily became Lady Tennyson upon Alfred's knighthood in 1884. This stunning portrait, taken in the mid-19th century, showcases Emily's delicate features, expressive eyes, and elegant attire. Her gentle smile and serene expression convey a sense of warmth and tranquility, making her an enduring muse for her husband's poetry. Throughout their marriage, Emily provided her husband with unwavering support and inspiration. She was his confidant, his critic, and his muse, and her influence can be seen in many of his most famous works, including "In Memoriam A.H.H." and "The Princess." After Alfred's death in 1892, Emily continued to live at their home, Aldworth House, in Lincolnshire, until her own passing on March 13, 1896. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of their deep connection and the lasting impact Emily had on her husband's literary legacy.
