EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative embroidered badge of the Welsh Guards was meticulously crafted by Private H. Gee of the 13th Battalion Manchester Regiment in March 1917, during his recovery at Netley Hospital. The intricate design showcases the regimental crest of the Welsh Guards, complete with the Welsh dragon and St. Edward's Crown. The label affixed to the reverse bears the address of Private Gee, Guernsey, Channel Islands, and a poignant note indicating that his ship, the Braemar Castle, was torpedoed off Salonika during World War I. The Welsh Guards, raised in 1915, saw active service in France, Palestine, and Macedonia. Private Gee's battalion, the 13th Manchester Regiment, was part of the 47th (1/2nd London) Division and was sent to Salonika in 1916. The division suffered heavy losses during the retreat from Monastir in October 1916 and was later involved in the Battle of Doiran in 1917. This embroidered badge is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Private Gee and countless others during the First World War. The intricacy and detail of the work speak to the dedication and resilience of the soldiers who created them, often during long hours of convalescence or downtime. This commemorative art piece is a testament to the rich military history of the Welsh Guards and the indomitable spirit of those who served.
