EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intricately detailed handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages," we are transported back to ancient Egypt to witness a selection of household items used by its noble inhabitants. The central figure of the image is an Egyptian king, regally seated on an ornate throne adorned with hieroglyphics and intricate carvings. He holds a scepter, a symbol of royal power, in one hand, while the other hand rests on a small altar, suggesting the performance of religious rituals. Surrounding the throne are various Egyptian household items, each meticulously rendered in vibrant colors. A ploughshare lies nearby, indicative of the agricultural prowess of the Egyptian people. Egyptian vases, adorned with elegant designs, stand tall, holding precious liquids or perhaps offering flowers. A chair, similar to the throne but less ornate, is also present, suggesting a more casual seating arrangement for everyday use. A cyathus, a shallow bowl with a handle, sits atop a marble-topped table, while a simpule, a small jug, rests beside it. A cithern, a type of harp-like musical instrument, lies on the floor, hinting at the importance of music in Egyptian culture. A necklace, intricately designed with precious stones and gold, is displayed on a stand, while a vase holds a beautiful headdress, adorned with feathers and other decorative elements. A marble head and a bust of the goddess Isis complete the scene, further emphasizing the religious significance of Egyptian household items. This engraving offers a glimpse into the rich and complex world of ancient Egyptian household life, showcasing the elegance, craftsmanship, and reverence for their gods that defined their daily existence.
