EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative artist's impression captures the grandeur and pageantry of what could have been the coronation of King Edward VIII had he not abdicated the throne in December 1936. The image depicts Edward, dressed in regal robes and wearing the iconic St. Edward's Crown, taking his seat on the historic English throne. Surrounded by the splendor of the Westminster Abbey, the new monarch is flanked by his Queen Consort, Wallis Simpson, and other members of the royal family. The coronation ceremony, steeped in centuries-old traditions and customs, would have been a spectacle of national significance. The pageant would have included the procession of the new king from the Tower of London to the Abbey, the anointing with holy oils, the investiture of the regalia, and the moment of crowning. However, the coronation of Edward VIII never came to pass. The announcement of his intention to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, in December 1936 led to a constitutional crisis. The British people and the Church of England could not accept a divorced woman as queen, and Edward was forced to abdicate just weeks before the scheduled coronation. This historical image offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of the British monarchy and the grandeur of a coronation ceremony. Despite the unfortunate circumstances that prevented Edward VIII from being crowned, the traditions and customs of the ceremony continue to be an integral part of the British monarchy and its history.
