Domitian was the last emperor of the Flavian Dynasty, which began with Vespasian in 69 AD and continued with his son, Titus, before passing to Domitian. Born in 51 AD, Domitian ascended to the throne following the death of his brother Titus in 81 AD. His reign, marked by authoritarian rule and paranoia, was a stark contrast to the relatively peaceful and prosperous periods under Vespasian and Titus. Domitian's rule was characterized by a focus on military expansion, the arts, and the restoration of traditional Roman values. This impressive statue, now housed in the Chiaramonti Museum at the Vatican, showcases Domitian in imperial attire, complete with a diadem and toga.
