This color print depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Malakoff during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The Ottoman forces, surrounded and besieged by the Russian army, are seen making a desperate attempt to storm the Malakoff Redan, a strategic fortification guarding the approaches to the city of Sevastopol. The intense struggle between the armed forces is palpable in this scene, with soldiers from both sides locked in a fierce wrestling match, each striving for dominance. The European powers, including the United Kingdom, had intervened in the conflict, imposing a blockade on Russia to prevent the supply of resources to the Russian army. The Battle of Malakoff, fought on October 5, 1855, marked a turning point in the war, ultimately leading to the Russian defeat and the end of the siege of Sevastopol.
