EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph, titled "Vaqueros of Brazil," is an intriguing glimpse into the past of Brazilian cattle herding culture. Dating back to the early 19th century, this image was part of Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen between 1835 and 1840. The scene depicts a group of Vaqueros, or Brazilian cowboys, skillfully herding cattle using sticks and the assistance of their loyal dogs. The Vaquero tradition originated from the Spanish settlers who brought their cattle-herding techniques to Brazil in the 16th century. Over time, these cowboys developed a unique identity and culture that became an integral part of Brazilian history. This ethnographic image captures the essence of their daily work, showcasing their distinctive costumes, tools, and the close bond between the Vaqueros and their canine companions. The Vaqueros' attire includes wide-brimmed hats, loose shirts, and trousers, all designed to protect them from the harsh sun and weather conditions. Their sticks, or "chicotes," are used to guide and control the cattle, while their dogs, known as "mestengos," help to separate and drive the cattle. The dogs were an essential part of the herding process, and their intelligence and agility made them invaluable partners for the Vaqueros. This lithograph offers a fascinating insight into the customs and traditions of the Vaqueros of Brazil, providing a window into a bygone era. Its intricate handcoloring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a valuable historical document and a beautiful work of art.
