EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of initiation for new members of the Carbonari, a secret Italian nationalist society, in the year 1820. The Carbonari, whose name translates to 'coal-burners,' drew inspiration from the Freemasons and employed a similar oath during their clandestine ceremonies. The society's ultimate goal was to unite Italians and overthrow the foreign rule that had long divided the Italian peninsula. The photograph portrays a dimly lit room filled with an air of mystery and intrigue. The new initiates, dressed in cloaks and hats, stand solemnly before their brethren, their faces obscured to protect their identities. The presiding figure, wearing a white robe and holding a sword, administers the oath, while other members look on intently. The room is adorned with symbols of the Carbonari, including the burning coal that gave the society its name. The Carbonari's activities reached their peak during the 1820s, with numerous uprisings and revolts against foreign rule taking place across Italy. Although the society was ultimately unsuccessful in achieving its goal of Italian unification, it played a significant role in inspiring the Italian nationalist movement and paving the way for the eventual rise of the Italian state. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Italian history, as new members joined the Carbonari and pledged their commitment to the cause of Italian independence. The image's haunting atmosphere and the secrecy surrounding the society's activities only add to the intrigue and fascination that surrounds the Carbonari to this day.
