EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic board, put up by the Germans on March 4, 1916, during the Battle of Verdun, proudly announces their significant victory against the French forces at Mount Sorrel. The inscription on the board, "BIS GESTERN ABEND WAREN AN. UNWARENDEIN GEFANGENEN GEZAHL. 228 OFFIZIERE 17370 FERNER WARDEN. BESCHUTZE DARUNDER SCHWERX," translates to "Yesterday evening there were 228 officers and 17,370 prisoners of war under our protection. 386,202 Acting Sergeant Herbert Gibson, MM, 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, was among the many casualties on the French side. Born in September 1889, Gibson was a brave and dedicated medic who served valiantly during the First World War. The board serves as a poignant reminder of the intense and brutal fighting that took place during the Battle of Verdun, one of the longest and deadliest battles in the history of warfare. The Battle of Verdun lasted from February 21 to December 18, 1916, and resulted in over 700,000 casualties on both sides. This rare and intriguing artifact is a testament to the sacrifices made by soldiers from all nations during the Great War.
