Arming the Ulster Volunteer Force: A Historical Night at Larne Harbor, 1914 This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in Irish history as the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) prepared for action against home rule in this scene at Larne Harbor, 20 miles from Belfast. In the dead of night, over 200 tons of guns and ammunitions were unloaded from the disguised steamer Mountjoy, hidden amongst the cargo of a seemingly innocuous merchant vessel. The clandestine operation was a crucial step in arming the anti-home rule faction, who sought to resist the implementation of home rule in Ulster.
