EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne I of Great Britain and Ireland, also known as Anne, Queen of Great Britain, was born on February 6, 1665, in London, England. She was the second surviving child and the fifth child of King James II and Anne Hyde. Anne ascended to the throne on March 8, 1702, following the death of her older sister, Mary II, and the subsequent death of their brother-in-law, William III. With the union of England and Scotland in 1707, Anne became the first sovereign of Great Britain and the last monarch of the House of Stuart. This striking statue of Anne I, located in front of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, is a replica by Richard Belt, created in 1885. Anne is depicted wearing a crown adorned with the crucifer, a symbol of her monarchical power, and holding a baton as a sign of her authority. The globe in her other hand represents her rule over England, Scotland, and Ireland. The statue stands as a testament to Anne's significant role in British history, as the last monarch of the Stuart dynasty and the first sovereign of Great Britain. Anne's reign, which lasted until her death on August 1, 1714, was marked by political instability and the War of the Spanish Succession. Despite these challenges, Anne's popularity endured, and she is remembered for her strong leadership and her commitment to the Church of England. This statue, a beautiful and enduring work of art, serves as a reminder of Anne's legacy and her place in the annals of British history.
