EDITORS COMMENTS
Jack Legs Diamond: The Notorious American Gangster and Bootlegger of the Roaring Twenties This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Jack Legs Diamond, an American gangster and bootlegger who ruled the criminal underworld of New York City during the Roaring Twenties. Born in 1897, Diamond, whose real name was John Sylvester Sullivan, earned his nickname due to his distinctive gait, which was the result of a childhood injury. Diamond's criminal career began in the early 1920s when Prohibition made the production and sale of alcohol a lucrative business. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key player in the illegal liquor trade in New York City. Diamond's empire extended beyond just bootlegging, as he also controlled various gambling dens, brothels, and protection rackets. Despite his criminal activities, Diamond was known for his charisma and charm. He was a regular at high-society events, often rubbing shoulders with the city's elite. Diamond's image was further romanticized by the media, who portrayed him as a dapper and debonair figure. However, Diamond's criminal empire was not without its challenges. He was a prime target for rival gangs, law enforcement, and even other members of his own organization. In 1931, Diamond was shot and killed in a hail of bullets in a brazen daylight assassination. This photograph, taken circa 1928, captures Diamond in his prime. He is dressed impeccably in a sharp suit and fedora, exuding an air of confidence and power. The image serves as a reminder of the allure and danger of the criminal underworld during the Roaring Twenties, a time when figures like Jack Legs Diamond ruled the streets of America's cities.
