The Seaforth Highlanders, a renowned Scottish infantry regiment, are depicted in their distinctive kilts and helmets, charging towards the fortified Sudanese defensive position, known as a zareba. The harsh desert landscape of Atbara, in present-day Sudan, is evident in the background, with the sun casting long shadows over the battlefield. The Battle of Atbara took place on April 8, 1898, during the Anglo-Egyptian conquest of the Sudan. The Seaforth Highlanders, under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir William Hicks, played a crucial role in the battle, which marked the end of the Mahdist War and the beginning of the British rule in Sudan. The Seaforth Highlanders' attack on the zareba was a pivotal moment in the battle, as it allowed the British forces to breach the Sudanese defenses and gain a decisive advantage.
