EDITORS COMMENTS
The Memorial Triptych, formerly known as the Gertz Memorial Triptych, is a captivating print that captures the essence of religious devotion and familial love. The central panel showcases the Lamentation, depicting a poignant scene of Christ's body being carried by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, while Mary, John, and Mary Magdalene watch over with solemnity. Flanking this powerful image are two wings adorned with nine male Donor Portraits featuring Saint John the Evangelist on the left wing inner side and nine female Donor Portraits with the Virgin and Child on the right wing. On the outer sides of these wings stand Saint Peter and Saint Mary Magdalene in striking grisailles. The founder of this magnificent triptych, Willem Gertz, is depicted alongside his sons and Saint John on one side panel. On the other side panel stands his wife Styntgen Dirck Claesgens with her daughters and Maria holding baby Jesus. This portrayal beautifully symbolizes their deep faith as well as their commitment to family values. Created in Nederlanden around 1527 by an artist named Hugo van der Goes (though it is a copy after his original work), this triptych exudes timeless beauty through its meticulous details painted using oil paint on panels. With integrated lists showcasing donors or supplicants along with patron saints if applicable, it serves as both a visual masterpiece and a testament to religious devotion. Measuring approximately 177 cm in height by 246 cm in width with a depth of 6.5 cm, this remarkable piece from Liszt Collection demands attention for its artistic brilliance and historical significance.
