January Sign Aquarius inscription states subject

January, with the Sign of Aquarius, January with the Sign or Aquarius, As the inscription below states, the subject of this painting is the month of January. The sign of the aquarius is depicted as a naked man who empties a jug of water. The peacock and lion are attributes of Juno, the goddess of protection of January. This peacock and the harp above it are derived from the Le Douze Mois Grotesques carpet series designed by Claude III Audran (1658-1734) around 1709, which was printed by Jean Audran (1667-1756). Both motifs appear on the print in January with the first two months. The mirrored winged man figures may go back to similar female figures in the loggia of Rafael (1483-1520), which Maderna may have known from, among others, the prints of Giovanni Volpato (1735-1803) and Giovanni Ottaviani (ca. 1735-1808) in Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano (1776-1777, see vol. 1, no. IX). other concepts (with signs or personifications of the planets together with zodiacal signs), ornament, grotesque, Jan Kamphuijsen, 1791, panel, oil paint (paint), h 334.5 cm × w 34.5 cm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a painting dedicated to the month of January, specifically focusing on the zodiac sign Aquarius. The central figure portrays a naked man pouring water from a jug, symbolizing the essence of Aquarius. Surrounding him are two significant attributes associated with January's protector goddess Juno - a majestic peacock and a fierce lion. The artist drew inspiration from Claude III Audran's Le Douze Mois Grotesques carpet series, created in 1709 and printed by Jean Audran. The inclusion of these motifs adds depth and historical significance to this artwork. Notably, the mirrored winged figures depicted in this painting may have been influenced by similar female figures found in Rafael's loggia. It is possible that Maderna, the artist behind this masterpiece, was familiar with prints by Giovanni Volpato and Giovanni Ottaviani showcasing Rafael's work. This stunning panel measuring 334.5 cm in height and 34.5 cm in width was expertly painted using oil paint by Jan Kamphuijsen in 1791. As you admire this print from Liszt Collection, let your imagination wander through time as you delve into the symbolism and artistry captured within this extraordinary piece celebrating January and its connection to Aquarius.
