Born in Penegoes, Wales in 1712-13 and passing away in Denbighshire in 1782, Wilson's career took an exciting turn when he embarked on a trip to Italy during the 1750s. It was during this time that he set out as a trainee landscapist and began creating spot sketches of the picturesque Italian countryside. In his studio back home, Wilson used these sketches as inspiration for larger compositions like House Pompey Albano.
