EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historical moment of "esposta al saccheggio segvito il di XIV febr MDCCXXXII" in Livorno. The artwork, created by Tuscher Marcus in 1732, depicts the magnificent Cuccagna monument commissioned by the Hebrew community to commemorate the joyous arrival and successful recovery of S. A. R. del seren: don Carlo infante di Spagna, dvca di Parma, e gran prencipe di Toscana. The ephemeral monument stands tall in front of the royal palace, taking the form of a pyramid adorned with intricate details. At its pinnacle stands a personification of Abundance holding a cornucopia, symbolizing prosperity and plenty. Surrounding this grand structure are fountains flowing with wine and an array of decorations including festoons, greased poles, food, fowls, cattle, and sheep. As we delve into this mesmerizing scene captured by Ink and grey wash on wove paper technique employed by Tuscher Marcus himself; we notice masked figures mingling among commedia dell arte characters amidst curious onlookers gathered at the square. Their presence adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this festive occasion. Through this print from Liszt Collection's archives emerges not only a visual representation but also a testament to history - showcasing how art can unite communities in celebration while immortalizing significant events for generations to come.
