EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection is a true masterpiece of artistry and storytelling. In this intricate composition, we are transported to a world where people, animals, and mythical beings coexist in harmony and chaos. In the foreground on the left side, adorable putti can be seen attempting to hold an eel in their tiny hands. However, their efforts prove unsuccessful as a mischievous monkey watches with amusement. The center of the image features a striking monument adorned with the portrait of Hagar, while standing beside it is Aaron, the Hebrew high priest. Curiously lurking beneath the monument is an adder. On the right side of this enchanting scene, another putto stumbles over an offense stone adding an element of surprise to this already dynamic composition. As our eyes wander towards the background, we are greeted by two intriguing elements -the Egyptian apis bull on one side and an earthquake on the other. The inclusion of Hagar and Aaron in non-biblical contexts adds depth and mystery to this artwork. Various attributes such as censers, ointment jars, rods or flowering walls further enhance their significance within this visual narrative. Created by Jan Goeree in 1722 through paper engraving techniques measuring 170 mm wide by 116 mm high; this print captures not only our attention but also sparks our imagination. It invites us to explore ancient mythology while appreciating Goeree's skillful craftsmanship.
