Coventry Cathedral EAW024986
COVENTRY CATHEDRAL. The old Cathedral was destroyed by incendiary bombs on 14 November 1940, with only its spire and outer walls surviving. Seen here from the air in July 1949 the Cathedral is surrounded by empty plots where other buildings were destroyed in the Coventry Blitz. The interior of the Cathedral had been cleared and looks very much as it still does today. A new Cathedral was completed on adjoining land in 1962. Aerofilms Collection (see Links)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this aerial photograph, Coventry Cathedral stands proudly yet somberly amidst the empty plots of a once bustling cityscape. Taken in July 1949, six years after the devastating Coventry Blitz of 1940, the image reveals the aftermath of the bombing that destroyed the old cathedral. The remnants of the historic structure are visible, with only the spire and outer walls surviving the incendiary bombs. The interior of the cathedral had been cleared, leaving an empty and haunting space. The surrounding area is a testament to the destruction wrought by the bombing raids, with no trace of the buildings that once stood there. The emptiness of the scene serves as a poignant reminder of the loss and devastation caused by the war. Despite the destruction, hope was not lost. A new Coventry Cathedral was built on adjoining land, completed in 1962. The modernist design, with its open and inviting structure, stands in stark contrast to the ruins of the old cathedral. The new cathedral is a symbol of resilience and rebirth, reflecting the spirit of the city and its people. This photograph, taken by Aerofilms, provides a unique perspective of Coventry Cathedral in its post-war state. It is a powerful reminder of the past, and a testament to the enduring strength and determination of the human spirit.
