EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Triumph of Renaissance Drama: Bankside Theatres, Southwark, London, c.1647 This illustration, created by renowned historian and artist Judith Dobie in 2016 for Historic England, transports us back to the vibrant and culturally rich Bankside area of Southwark, London, during the Stuart era. The focus of this evocative image is the cluster of three theatres that once stood proudly along the south bank of the Thames: The Hope, The Rose, and the most famed of all, The Globe. The Hope Theatre, depicted on the left, was the earliest of the three, with records suggesting its existence as early as 1613. The Rose Theatre, located in the middle, was built in 1587 and was the first theatre to be licensed for public performances. It was a significant venue for the early works of playwrights such as Shakespeare and Marlowe. The Globe Theatre, the grandest of the three, is shown in its iconic reconstruction, with its distinctive thatched roof and open-air design. This theatre, built in 1599, was the home of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men, and saw the premieres of many of Shakespeare's most celebrated plays. The Bankside theatres were a hub of artistic innovation and creativity during the late Elizabethan and early Stuart periods. They provided a platform for the development of English drama and the emergence of some of the greatest literary figures in history. This illustration offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage that once flourished in this part of London, and serves as a testament to the enduring power of the written and performed word.
