EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, painted by Robert Lefèvre in 1802, hangs in Apsley House in London, the former residence of the Duke of Wellington. The Duke acquired the painting in 1815, following his victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) rose to prominence during the French Revolution and became the Emperor of the French in 1804. He is depicted here in the prime of his power, wearing the uniform of a Marshal of France and adorned with the insignia of the Legion of Honour. The portrait conveys a sense of strength and determination, reflecting Napoleon's military prowess and charisma. The painting is a testament to the complex relationship between Wellington and Napoleon. The two men had clashed on several occasions, most notably at the Battle of Waterloo, but they also shared a mutual respect for each other's military abilities. Wellington reportedly purchased the portrait as a gift for his wife, the Duchess of Wellington, who was a French noblewoman and a cousin of Napoleon's sister. The portrait is an important example of the neoclassical style, which was popular in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Lefèvre's use of bold colors and dramatic lighting creates a sense of grandeur and majesty, fitting for a portrait of a military and political leader of Napoleon's stature. Today, the portrait remains a significant part of the collection at Apsley House, which is now open to the public as a museum and tourist attraction. It offers visitors a glimpse into the complex history of the Napoleonic Wars and the enduring legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte.
