Tilly in Rothenburg, 1631, (1936). Creator: Unknown

Tilly in Rothenburg, 1631, (1936). Woman pleading with Count Tilly in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Catholic commander Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly (1559-1632) wanted to burn the city of Rothenburg, and condemned the city councilmen to death. The councillors, in an effort to appease him, offered him wine in a large cup. Tilly challenged anyone to drink all the wine in one go, and promised that if it was done he would spare the city. The mayor, Georg Nusch, succeeded in emptying the cup and so saved his city. The events have been commemorated annually since 1881 in the play " Der Meistertrunk" (The Master Draught). From " Bilder Deutscher Geschichte", (Pictures of German History), No.12, cigarette card album. [Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, Altona-Bahrenfeld, Hamburg, Germany, 1936]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Tilly in Rothenburg, 1631" takes us back to a pivotal moment in history. The image captures a woman pleading with Count Tilly in the picturesque town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. In 1631, Catholic commander Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, sought to burn the city and condemned its councilmen to death. Desperate to save their beloved city, the councilmen devised a daring plan. They offered Count Tilly an enormous cup filled with wine and challenged anyone to drink it all at once. If successful, the city would be spared from destruction. Mayor Georg Nusch stepped forward and accomplished this seemingly impossible feat. Since that fateful day, this extraordinary event has been commemorated annually through the renowned play "Der Meistertrunk" (The Master Draught), starting in 1881. This powerful image serves as a reminder of human resilience and ingenuity during times of adversity. The photograph itself is part of the esteemed collection "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" (Pictures of German History) from 1936. Although its creator remains unknown, it beautifully encapsulates both historical significance and artistic expression. As we gaze upon this remarkable scene frozen in time, we are transported back centuries ago when one man's determination saved an entire city from ruin. It stands as a testament to courage and sacrifice while reminding us of our shared humanity throughout different periods in history.
